Elizabeth "Betty" Buckner, 83, changed her address from Roanoke, VA to HEAVEN, Saturday, August 17, 2013. A native of Shelbyville KY, she was the daughter of the late Rev. R.A. and Helen Bell Craig. Students recall being jealous of her gorgeous looks when she would stop by Shelbyville High School, where her former husband taught physical education. Betty was especially known for her inner beauty. Anyone who encountered Betty knew instantly she was full of grace, gratitude and goodness – and a great laugh. Her smile and sparkling eyes filled a room – as did the aroma of every dish she prepared. She remembered the joy of cooking the very week of her passing. Betty believed she added love as an ingredient to everything she prepared. She co-owned an interior decorating business in Shelbyville but her most beloved job in life was taking care of her four daughters – and then passing on that adoration to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless friends. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ denomination for which her late father had started nine churches. She was currently a member of the Westside Church of Christ. Proceeding her in death are her husband, John Buckner; brothers, Tom and Bobby Craig; sisters, Virginia Scearce and Susie Stout, and son-in-law, Ron Oliver. She is survived by her daughters: Lucy Tkachenko; Bea Williams (Warner); Julia Reed (Mark); Cynthia Oliver; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces other family members and friends. Memorial service will be held noon Friday, August 23, 2013, at Oakey's South Chapel in Roanoke with The Rev. Charlie Gwaltney officiating. The Betty Buckner Celebration of Life will follow immediately after at the Valhalla Vineyards, 6500 Mt. Chestnut Rd, Roanoke, VA 24018. Monetary gifts of love for Betty Buckner can be made to Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Avenue Roanoke, VA 24018.
