Joann Yancey Waits, age 92, longtime resident of Frankfort KY died June 18, 2012 at the Masonic Home in Shelbyville KY. Born May 9, 1920 in Winchester, KY, Joann was the only child of Josephine and Frederick Yancey. She is preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Oakley Smith Waits (December 9, 1997) and survived by her only son, Frederick Yancey "Fred" Waits (Cathy) of Shelbyville, KY. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Melissa Waits Willen (Mike); Charles F. "Chad" Waits, and Emily Ann Waits. She was the proud great-grandmother of Christopher Patrick Willen.
Joann was a member of the Frankfort, KY Church of the Ascension-- Episcopal. A graduate of the 1938 class of Frankfort High School, Joann worked for the Kentucky Department of Transportation. She retired after more than 35 years of service. Always active, Joann was an avid golfer and was a founding member of the Frankfort Juniper Hills Ladies Golf Association. She was happiest on the golf course and was very competitive into her late 80's.She also enjoyed fishing and camping and was a member of the Boone Campers Association. Joann will be remembered for her long volunteer service as the Girl Scout Leader for Troop #45 in Frankfort.
She was a strong and able mentor to young women in pursuit of leadership skills and self-reliance. With Joann's interest in Girl Scouting, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Girl Scouts of Kentucky Wilderness Road at 2277 Executive Drive; Lexington, KY 40505; phone: 859-293-2621 The family wishes to thank the staff of the Masonic Home in Shelbyville KY for their outstanding and dedicated care provided to Joann in these last few years. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The funeral was Thursday, June 21, 2012 with interment in the Frankfort Cemetery. Rogers Funeral Home of Frankfort KY was in charge of arrangements.
