Joseph Neel Smith, 86, died Friday, January 11, 2013. He was a native of Shelby County. He was a retired farmer, inventor and an owner, breeder, trainer and driver of standard bred harness horses. He won many races and awards in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and West Virginia. He was a member of the Olive Branch United Methodist Church. His parents, Milton Duvall and Evelyn Neel Smith and one sister, Sarah Ruth Hammonds, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lula Gardner Smith; daughters, Sarah Patterson and JoAnn McBride (Bill); grandchildren, Michael Bohannon and Cindy Patterson-Moore (Jimmy); great-grandchildren, Dakotia and Destiny; sister, Betsy Johnston and nieces and nephews. A private family service was held at the Grove Hill Cemetery Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may be made to The Gideons International in his memory. Arrangements were handled by Webb Funeral Home.
