Sam Medley, age 79, of Finchville, KY, passed away after a short, but courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, with his family by his side. He was born on February 3, 1939 in Anderson County, KY to Sam and Elizabeth Phillips Medley.
Sam was a graduate of Simpsonville High School and was a graduate of the University of Kentucky. He was a life-long farmer, and employed by Huber Tractor Company, Shelbyville, KY. He was also a real estate agent with W.A. Smith Realty Co. and Torrey Smith Realty Co.
Sam was a member of the Finchville Baptist Church where he had served on the deacon board, trustee board, and was a Sunday School teacher. After he became semi-retired, Sam enjoyed working in the yard with his flowers, matting and framing prints, caning chairs, collecting and refurbishing doll houses, and mowing on the farm. He also loved attending auctions and yard sales.
He was a member of the Kentucky Farm Bureau, the Democratic Party, and was Kentucky Young Farmer in 1968.
Sam was a people person, never meeting a stranger, and was quite a jokester. He was well-known in the county for his yard decorations and shared those with the community at Christmas time with a Holiday Open House.
Sam and his wife of 60 years, Joyce Wakefield, married in 1957. Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, and great grandson, Blake Hundley.
Sam is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Michael Medley (Stephanie), Kevin Medley (Janice), and Cindy Hance; his grandchildren, Justin Medley, Kelly Medley Hundley (Ada), Sarah Hance (Eric Becher), Samantha Hance, Suzanna Lindig (Tyler); and great grandchildren, Bryson and Olivia Hundley, Laila Cheng, Colton Lindig, August Belcher, Liam and Landon Phillips, and Tigger-his cat.
A personal thank to Dr. Joseph Maly of Norton Cancer Institute for his compassionate care; Harold Johnson for his devoted friendship; and Vicki Largen for her loving care.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 9th at the Shannon Funeral Home. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery.
