Vandy M. Powell Jr. Lt Col. (USAF Ret) passed away in Shelbyville Kentucky on Nov 30, 2018 at the age of 86. Vandy was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Vandy and Sallye Powell on January 6, 1932. Vandy graduated from Louisville Male High School and the University of Louisville. After college, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, serving for 26 years as a pilot and flight instructor. He flew in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) and rose to the rank of Lt. Col before retiring. Vandy was a lover of music and played many instruments including guitar and hammered dulcimer. He was an active member of the Louisville Dulcimer society. Vandy led a wonderful life; he served his country, traveled extensively, was a speaker of several languages, a lover of animals and the environment and a proud father and grandfather.

Vandy was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters. He is survived by his children, David Powell (Woodland Park, CO), Steve Powell (Colorado Springs, CO), and Kathy Powell-Ayon (Spring, TX), their mother, Barbara, and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving wife, Linda, her children and grandchildren.
