Melvin Eugene Gaines Sr., 66, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at his home following a long illness. A native of Lawrenceburg, he was the son of the late Ralph and Hattie Bray Gaines. He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from General Electric Company as a material handler. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles. In addition to his parents, one son, Robert Alan Gaines and two sisters, Verlie Ann Baker and Pauline Vest, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carolyn Jones Gaines of Shelbyville; daughter, Tammy Sue (Brent) Elrod of Palmyra, IN; sons, David Wayne Gaines and Melvin E. Gaines Jr., both of Shelbyville and Kevin T. (Pam Fisher) Gaines of Palmyra, IN; sister, Gladys Bussey of Louisville; brother, Charles Brent Gaines of Shelbyville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, July 7 at Webb Funeral Home. MiKayla Gaines, Jordan Gaines and Wendy Gaines officiated, and burial followed with military honors at Grove Hill Cemetery.
