Gerald Lee Obituary

Gerald "Jerry" Lee

Gerald "Jerry" Lee, 62, of San Francisco, passed away on December 24, 2014.

Jerry was born in San Francisco to Fon Yook Lee and Sai Soo Lee on August 15, 1952. He grew up in San Francisco and attended Washington Irving Elementary, Francisco Junior High and Galileo High Schools, City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University.

Jerry married Beverly Chin in 1975 in San Francisco. They were happily married for over 39 years. Together they forged a loving partnership and were actively engaged in the community, including the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade, Self-Help for the Elderly, Chinatown Community Development Center, Community Youth Center of San Francisco, Cameron House, Wu Yee Children's Services, United Way of the Bay Area, Have a Ball Foundation, Salvation Army, APA Family Services, Glide Memorial Church, the San Francisco Junior Giants, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, On Lok, Boys & Girls Club, Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, and the Asian Police Officers Association. He was also a huge fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers.

Jerry worked at UPS for 43 years, starting as a loader and moved up the organization to become Community Affairs Manager. At UPS, he took on special assignments at the regional and corporate levels and was recognized for his work as the United Way Coordinator and Congressional Awareness Coordinator. In his role as Community Affairs Manager, he reached out to California's non-profit organizations, extended grants and sponsorships and coordinated teams of volunteers on weekends to support the work of the community.

Mayor Art Agnos tapped Jerry to help set up San Francisco's newly formed Department of Parking and Traffic and to serve as chair of the City's Taxi Committee where Jerry helped write the industry's manual. Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed Jerry to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors; Mayor Ed Lee re-appointed Jerry to this post.

Jerry is survived by his spouse Beverly; his children Kimberly, Corbett and Bennett; his mother Sai Soo Lee; his sisters Aimee, Vickie, Marie and Patricia; and his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Fon Yook Lee.

A Memorial Service will be held for family, friends and colleagues on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 10:30 am at Francisco Middle School, 2190 Powell Street, San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Self-Help for the Elderly, Chinatown Community Development Center, or to a charity of one's choice.

Even now, I catch myself picking up the phone to call you and chat. From talking to you every day to not at all. It will take me a while for me to get with it. Thanks, Jerry, for everything. You have always been a wonderful partner and friend to me and my husband. We will miss you so very much.

I met Jerry last year and only for a 2 week period for UPS sales training. I left both weeks and said to everyone in my area, now there is a guy who makes the company what it is and why people stay with a company. It's for people like Jerry Lee. If only we had a Jerry Lee in every part of this place, how amazing it would be! Jerry lived life to the fullest. I am glad to have met him and wished I had got to see him a few more years at work functions.

Thank you Jerry Lee for all of your help and mentoring during my career and for always being such a wonderful friend and acquaintance. I always lit up when you were around as your smile and your happiness was so contagious. Can't believe you are really gone and I can only pray that your spiritual journeys are as wonderful as the ones you had while earthbound. With much love in my heart I will see you someday in the afterlife.

Jerry! Jerry! We got to go...Why? Because the Giants are on TV, that's why...You can't go? Why not? Okay, I give up what are you working on now? The spring festival or school crossing guard program. Or, maybe it's the Chinatown parade on Grant Ave or the Portsmouth square carnival.

Jerry, the Giants are playing the Dodgers!! Our arch enemies.

Tell Bev you're sorry but we got to go...You promised her What!! Her own 15 cent French fries at Tic Toc's tomorrow?....What do you mean, could you borrow a nickel from me for the fries.

The above incidents are not factual but was posted in an effort to reflect somewhat the spirit of Jerry's person and being and to fulfill to some small degree his family's desire to celebrate Jerry's life and times.

I met Jerry at UPS and worked with him on occasions over the years. He was always a considerate, thoughtful and funny person even when conflicts arose around him with others. He was a pretty good mediator.....

He was always multi tasking and working on something whether it be work related or not. And,, if you needed to talk to him you had to sometimes walk along the hallways and stairs with him just to get some words in. But, if you really needed the time to discuss something with him whether work related or not, he would make the time for you.

Go Jerry, Giants and 49ers. Rest in Peace.
