Richard Lieurance Obituary

Dr. Richard Edward Lieurance

Dr. Richard Edward Lieurance, an Ophthalmologist, died at Alameda Hospital of heart failure on June 28, 2013. He was 90 years old. Dr. Lieurance lived a fabulous life! He was born in Lusk, Wyoming in 1922. He attended Tulane Medical School after Texas Tech, and joined the Navy as an officer while still in medical school during WWII. He served as a Flight Surgeon with Airgroup17 and spent time on the USS Kearsarge, the Coral Sea, Roosevelt and the Midway. In 1960, he was appointed Chief of Ophthalmology at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital and was also one of the youngest captains in the U.S. Navy. One of his favorite patients was Admiral Nimitz. He retired from the Navy in 1964 and went into private practice on Oakland's "Pill Hill." He operated at Peralta Hospital, Summit, Providence and many others. His patients adored him. He performed the first corneal transplants in the Bay Area in 1966. He stayed in private practice until he was almost 80 years old!

Dr. Lieurance was also a great athlete. He was the singles tennis champion of the Navy in 1953 and won the Sequoyah Country Club senior golf championship 3 times. He is survived by his four children Cheryl Rawson and Colette Newell of Orem, Utah, Daryl Allen of San Diego, and Richard Lieurance MD of Salem, Oregon-also an ophthalmologist, his 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, stepchildren, as well as his wife, Daniela from Alameda, California.

It's almost 10 years later & today Dr. Lieurance crossed my mind again as some of the things he predicted would happen to my sight are starting to happen. I was one of his "high myopes". He was understanding of my unusual vision problems and treated me extra kindly. I love him to this day. I pray he is having a great time on the golf course, or whatever activity in the next realm!

I was sorry to hear about Dr. Lieurance's passing. I had some memorable conversations with him about his beautiful, classic Maserati and Porsche. Wishing you well on your "next" adventure.
