Yvonne Mero Baker
1927-2013
Yvonne Baker died peacefully in her San Francisco home on April 14 after a long illness. Born in Oakland, a third-generation Californian, she graduated from Anna Head School and Mills College.
She began her career in journalism as a columnist on the Richmond Independent and moved to the San Francisco Chronicle where she was society editor during the late 1950s and early '60s. In San Francisco, she met Edgar (Ed) Baker, beginning a 38-year marriage during which they acquired an historic row of houses on Russian Hill where they happily spent the rest of their lives. Yvonne and Ed were great travelers, touring throughout Europe and visiting Paris often. In California, they often relaxed at their hilltop house in the Santa Cruz mountains enjoying neighbors and entertaining visitors.
After leaving the Chronicle, Yvonne wrote and published a popular guide to Bay Area dining, "Diners' Diary", that circulated throughout the '70s to enthusiastic subscribers.
Cheerful, gregarious, creative and a patron of the arts, Yvonne was a longtime supporter of the San Francisco Opera, Symphony, Museum of Modern Art and was on the Board of the Community Music Center for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1997 and is survived by her sister, Anne Mero Adelmann of San Francisco, a niece, Diana Baker Mounoud of Spain, a nephew Peter Baker of Australia and two godchildren. Her bright presence will be missed by her family near and far, as well as by many friends and neighbors. A memorial gathering is planned.

Yvonne's & Ed's Redwood Retreat Rd cabin sat on land that was once part of our "ranch" here in the hills between Morgan Hill and Aptos. Although Yvonne's visits became less frequent after Ed's passing, we always enjoyed seeing her and enjoying a cocktail and nosh on either her deck or ours. Dawna and I will miss you Yvonne.
