Robert Miller Obituary

Robert Folger Miller Died peacefully at home in Hillsborough on the 14th of February 2013, aged 90 years. His funeral will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, February 22nd at St. Catherine of Siena in Burlingame.
Robert F. Miller was born on the 9th of January 1923, the eldest son of Robert Watt Miller and Elizabeth Jane Folger. His early years were spent in Hillsborough before he attended Cate School. World War II interrupted his education. Enlisting in Jan 1943 he was subsequently commissioned as an officer in the US Army Air Corp. He landed on Utah Beach in Normandy in June 1944 and served in Northwest Europe until the end of the war in Europe in May 1945. On his return to the US Robert resumed his education at Harvard. War, this time in Korea, again interrupted his life and he was recalled to active duty in 1950 serving as an aide to the commanding general of U S Air Forces in Western United States. Resuming civilian life, he returned to study and received his law degree from the University of San Francisco. Thereafter, he practiced law in San Francisco with Pillsbury Madison and Sutro in San Francisco until his retirement in 1988.
Robert was passionate about hunting, skiing, and wild life. He hunted red deer and grouse in Scotland, pheasants in England and partridges in Spain where he shot for over 30 years and where time spent at the hunting lodge of El Crespo was one of the highlights of his year. He was an early member of the Pacific Valley Duck Club in Marysville where, with his beloved retrievers, he shot regularly. He skied throughout Europe, spending much time in St. Anton, Austria and Gstaad, Switzerland, but he loved the Sugar Bowl at Tahoe so much that he built one of the early houses there. He travelled extensively in Europe in the 1960's. At home he was a long standing member of the Pacific Union Club and President of the Burlingame Country Club to which he was devoted. He was an enthusiastic performer in the BCC review shows. Robert loved the Hawaiian Islands and their vibrant flora and fauna. He was a Board member of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens on Kauai and visited the islands often.
Robert married Leonora (Lori) Wurmbrand in 1948 with whom he had children, Therese, Paul and Albert. Lori and Albie predeceased him. He married again in 1965, Maryon Maguire Funsten whose 4 children, Reed, Meade, Peter, and Kirk became a much loved part of the family. Maryon, Reed and Kirk predeceased him. His 7 grandchildren, multiple nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews were all swept by Uncle Bob into the Miller family for whom he had enormous love and respect. In the last decades of his life, he sponsored a popular family lunch gathering at the BCC every Easter and Thanksgiving.
Robert was devoted to the Catholic Church and St. Catherine of Sienna in Burlingame. He was a generous supporter of many Catholic charities and was a Knight of the order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta.
Robert Miller loved and served his country, his community and his family. His was a noble spirit, and his sense of humor, intelligence and humanity were inspirational. He appealed to the old and young alike. All who knew him and were touched by him will mourn his death; but celebrate a life lived to the fullest.

Robert, thank you and Maryon for all the love and support you provided me for 5 wonderful years. Because of you and your wife I was able to complete my degree and provide for my family. Thank you for bringing me into your life and home. I know this message is so late, however, it was unknown that you had past. Since the internet is an archive that should span for years to come, know that you and Maryon will always be in my heart. May God continue to bless you in heaven as your hearts were of gold.

Sincerely,

German Lopez Jr.

Bob I spent 28 years shooting at El Crespo. Your dry wit and your unfailing ability to pop Mickey's bubble was an endless source of entertainment. You were always dapper and never thrown off balance by anyone there. For me you were the last of the Mohicans. Adios amigos.
