Esther Barthol

Esther Simpson Barthol died peacefully in Venice, CA, her residence for 42 years. Esther was born in San Francisco & raised in Oakland by her parents Daniel Clark Simpson & Rebecca Cohn Simpson. Esther received her BA in 1937 from U Berkeley. Both her parents, her sons & grand-daughters were also alumni of the University of California system. She married Richard P. Barthol in 1942, who died in 2004. Esther lived in Spain, Malaysia & Brazil with Dr. Barthol during his sabbaticals from his thirty-year professorship at UCLA, & traveled the world visiting all seven continents - a dream fulfilled. Esther was active in the Cal Little Theater, the NYC Group Theater, and was politically active wherever she lived. She worked as a counselor for the CA Dept. of Employment and Dept. of Social Services. In recent years she was a stalwart in the Emeritus Autobiography Class & Emeritus Chorus at Santa Monica College. She is survived by sisters-in-law Audrea Guthrie and Peggy Barthol, son Clark and his wife Meta, son Bruce and his partner Joan Keller Selznik, grand-daughter Lora, grand-daughter Sara, her husband Dan Shulman & great grand-daughter Billie Blue Sky. She is truly missed.
