Eugene Clark

Eugene "Gene" Hoyne Clark

Passed away suddenly on March 2, 2013. He was born on Dec. 12, 1929, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Forrest J. Clark and Della J. Clark (nee Hoyne). He graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1947 and by 1952 received bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Northwestern University.


In 1952, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea. He came to San Francisco in 1959 and taught choral music for the San Francisco Unified School District from 1968 to 1989. In addition to teaching, Gene had part-time and substitute music positions in several Bay Area churches including St. Francis Lutheran Church, Lakeside Presbyterian Church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church (Oakland) and Woodside Village Church. Gene was a long-time member of St. Francis Lutheran Church.


He was preceded in death by his first life companion, Leonard Carrington, his parents, his brother, Forrest Clark, and his niece, JoAnne McDaniel. He is survived by his current life companion, Bill Catherwood, Leonard's sister, Mecita Castillo, his sister-in-law, Solveig Clark, his niece, Cynthia Dall, and his nephews, Paul Clark and John Clark.


A funeral services at St. Francis Lutheran Church, 152 Church Street, San Francisco at 4 pm on Sunday, April 21, 2013 with interment of ashes in the Memorial Terrace at the church immediately following.
