Frank Giannini

Frank Joseph Giannini

Frank Joseph Giannini died in his sleep Friday March 8, 2013 in San Francisco at the age of 97. Born on June 8, 1915 in San Francisco to Joseph and Julia Giannini, he was a life-long San Francisco resident who grew up in the Excelsior district where he attended Monroe Elementary and Balboa High School. From childhood he had a passion for sports and played football for Balboa and USF. At the start of WWII he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and while at a USO dance in Pendleton, Oregon, he met his future wife, Verneta. When he returned from China after the end of the war they were married, and he joined his father in the meat business, enjoying the life of a gentleman butcher on Mission Street for the next 35 years. Frank and Verneta eventually moved to the rapidly growing Sunset district to raise a family, and though they spent many days on drives down the peninsula to look at new homes, they never moved again. Frank used to mock golfers, but the day he retired he became a convert, playing the game with such enthusiasm and gusto that he quickly joined the hole-in-one club. He loved watching sports, both college and pro football and baseball, following the 49ers and the Giants from the day they started in San Francisco until the end of his life, with friendly wagers often enhancing his enjoyment of the games. Frank had a strong desire to reach centenarian status, and though he didn't quite make it, he was pleased to have lived long enough to see his teams win many championships. He will be remembered fondly for his colorful stories of growing up in San Francisco in the early years of the 20th Century.

Frank was predeceased by his wife Verneta, parents Joe and Julia, brother Ralph and sister Helen. He is survived by his sons Bruce (Laura), Ron (Janet) and grandchildren Carl, Mark and Laura.

A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 4 pm on Friday, March 29 in the Columbarium at the Neptune Society, 1 Loraine Court. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the .
