Gertrude Young

Gertrude Young

Was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 14, 1919 to Lim and Ella Young. She died in Oakland on March 15, 2013. She is survived by a sister, Winona Wood of Honolulu and her two sons, Joshua in AZ and Barry in HI and their families, by her devoted cousin, Elizabeth T. Wong of Alameda, and by her loving confidante niece, Jean Wood of Phoenix.


Gertrude was married twice, to Joe Collins and to James Love, both are deceased. She received her BA from UCLA in 1940 and an MA from UCB in 1941. She was employed from 1955 to 1984 at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and retired as contract and grant officer. In her retirement years, she was active in supporting liberal causes, restoring civil liberties, single payer health care, ending the war in Iraq, and campaigning for Barack Obama.
