JACK BALESTRERI

Jack Balestreri 95, of San Francisco passed away peacefully in his home on April 21, 2012 of natural causes. Jack's excellent work ethic started early. At 7 years old, Jack worked in a machine shop after school. At 17 years old, he helped build the Golden Gate Bridge. For his contribution, Mayor Diane Feinstein recognized him with the Key to the City in 1987 at the Bridge's 50th anniversary celebration. He was the last living SF resident who worked on this project. Prior to World War II, he learned the sheet metal trade at W. R. Ames. During the war, Jack worked at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyards. There, in 1942, he met his beloved wife, Marina. They married on May 16, 1943. Jack's career at Scott Co. Mechanical Contractors started in 1946 and lasted almost 40 years. A proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union #104 for 70 years, he held the honor of being one of their oldest members. At 8 years old, Jack started his lifelong passion of playing baseball. As an adult, he was signed by the Sacramento Solons in the Pacific Coast League. Jack continued as a member of the SF Old-timers Baseball Association. Although he did not play in recent years, his continued membership awarded him the distinction of being the Association's oldest member. He was an avid outdoorsman spending countless hours hunting and fishing. His passion for these sports was unparalleled, as was his love of music and dancing. Jack is survived by his wife, Marina of 69 years, daughter Lynette (Lynn) Balestreri of San Francisco, daughter Gayle Balestreri of Westlake Village, California, son Jon Balestreri of El Dorado, California, daughter Teresa (Teri) Crawford of Thousand Oaks, California, grandsons, Brian Gerald (Jerry) MacDonald, Jr., Chance Crawford, Jack Crawford, and 5 great-grandchildren.
