Rev. James P. McCauley, S.J.

Father James P. McCauley, S.J., 87 died in Regis infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, CA on October 12, 2012 after a brief illness. He had been a member of the Jesuit Order for 69 years and an ordained priest for 56 years.
Jim was born in San Anselmo, CA on March 26, 1925, and after graduating from St. Ignatius College Prep, San Francisco, and a semester at the University of San Francisco, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos on February 10, 1943.
After studies, including an MA in Philosophy from Gonzaga (1949), he taught religion and philosophy at the University of San Francisco and religion and mathematics and St. Ignatius College Prep. Theological studies were made at Alma College, and he was ordained a priest in San Francisco on June 15, 1956.
Jim did graduate studies in psychology at Fordham University and taught for several years at the University of San Francisco. He also served as a counselor to USF students at a program in Innsbruck, Austria. Parochial ministry was also a major focus and he spent many years in parish work in Larchmont, NY and at various parishes around northern California. His last position was at St. Patrick's Church, Tonopah, NV, where he was pastor from 1998 to 2005. Failing health brought him to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, where he continued his ministry as long as he was able.
He is survived by cousin Virginia Vanoni of San Rafael, CA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 18 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, 300 College Avenue, Los Gatos, CA 95030, followed by burial at the Jesuit plot at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara, CA 95050.

Jim was a very fine person; i remember him graciously handing over his office and everything in it when i arrived as a new prof at USF.I felt most welcome, because of him! LeeBender
