Janet Z. Baker

Janet Zahniser Baker died on February 28, 2013 at age 90 in San Francisco, CA, after almost 30 years as a resident of Concord and Clayton CA.


Mrs. Baker taught school in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; served as director of the East Orange New Jersey Senior Citizens Department; and worked as a mission consultant to the Synod of the Northeast and the Presbytery of Newark of the Presbyterian Church USA until her retirement in 1983.


She was married (in 1945) to Donald Edgar Baker for 59 years until his death in 2004. The couple moved to Contra Costa County after their retirement. Locally, Mrs. Baker volunteered at the Contra Costa Food Bank, SHARE, Volunteer Center of Contra Costa, Probation Department and Project Second Chance. She was an active member of Clayton Valley Presbyterian Church.


Mrs. Baker was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Aspinwall High School in Pittsburgh and Muskingum College in Ohio. She is survived by her son Steven and his wife Louise and daughter Susan Baker-Lehne and her husband Richard, as well as grandchildren Sara Baker Frankenfeld, Beth Baker and Chad Baker, and great grandchildren Josef and Ana Frankenfeld.


Memorial services will be at Clayton Valley Presbyterian Church, Clayton, at 3 pm on Saturday April 6. Contributions in lieu of flowers to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties, P. O. Box 6324, Concord, CA 94524, www.foodbankccs.org.
