Joan Schmidt

Joan Elizabeth Schmidt

Jan. 26, 1926 to Mar. 4, 2014

Our mother passed on suddenly, and peacefully, last Tuesday in Walnut Creek. Joan Palmer was born in Oakland on January 26, 1926, to John Palmer and Marguerite Favreau Palmer.  As a child she studied tap dancing, and in the era of Shirley Temple became quite proficient as an entertainer at East Bay events. She attended St. Elizabeth's Grammar School and High School, foregoing college upon graduation to help the war effort by working at Cutter Laboratories in Berkeley. At a dance at Clear Lake she met Bill Schmidt, who was to become the love of her life. They married in Oakland on September 2, 1944, while Bill was on leave from service in Greenland with the Army Air Corps. When the war ended, they drove from Oakland to Acapulco for a belated honeymoon. They settled in San Leandro in 1948, where they would raise their family of three boys. Joan was active in Assumption Parish for many years, serving as President of the Mothers' Guild, and was an enthusiastic supporter of Bishop O'Dowd High School. She obtained an Associate of Arts degree in Library Science from Chabot College, and  subsequently worked at McKinley School in San Leandro. When Bill retired, they began a life of travel around the world's continents, and regularly visited Mexico and Hawaii. Joan loved the ocean, loved sailing, and liked nothing better than to collect agates on beaches along the North Coast. She loved the San Francisco Giants and the California Golden Bears. Mom spent her latter years in Castro Valley, living a full and loving life with our Dad until his death last year. She leaves her sons Gregory of Sacramento, Paul (Gloria) of Granite Bay, and Brendan (Denise) of Walnut Creek, nine grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is survived by nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law Beatrice Lademan of Rossmoor. Her Requiem Mass will be said Tuesday, March 11, at 10:30 am at Assumption Church, 1100 Fulton Avenue, San Leandro. In her memory, spend a day at the beach with someone you love.
