John Cardozo

John Nunez Cardozo

1924 - 2013

John was the beloved, proud, and devoted patriarch of a four-generation family home in San Francisco, where he completed a peaceful passing on September 30, 2013 while surrounded by family members. After suffering a heart attack at the age of 45, his heart finally stopped beating a few weeks before his 89th birthday. He would have attributed many of those years to his participation in the Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease, in which he was an original study subject and avid spokesman.

After serving in WWII and graduating from Harvard, John joined his family in running Cardozo's Furniture in downtown St. Paul, MN. Later he was among the founding members of Minnesota Metro State University. After moving to San Francisco, he operated a family bookstore business before retiring in 1985.

Married for 63 years, he is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Peter (Austin, TX) and daughter Laurie (SF), sons-in-law David and Arnold (SF), and other family members including eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was sadly preceded in death by his daughter Shiner (SF) in 2001.

Memorials may be sent to the Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen of San Francisco in his name.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service Saturday October 12, 2013 at 3:00PM at SULLIVAN'S FUNERAL HOME, 2254 Market St. bet Noe and Sanchez Sts.
