Dr. Joseph Louis Henry (Sr.) Passed away peacefully in his home in San Rafael, CA, on Tuesday October 11, 2011, after long years with Lewy Body Dementia. He was 87 years of age. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 2, 1924, Joe made his career as an internationally prominent healthcare leader, academic administrator, and champion of healthcare and humanitarian causes throughout the United States and abroad. He ended his professional career in 2000, serving as Interim Dean and retiring as Professor Emeritus at Harvard's School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Previously, he was Dean of Howard University's College of Dentistry from 1966-1975, retiring as Dean Emeritus, and also served as Chairman of the Board of the Illinois College of Optometry during both of his deanships. Joe leaves behind many relatives and innumerable friends, and also literally thousands of his students who carry on his humanistic approach to healthcare throughout the world. Among these: his wife Dr. Gracia B. Cua of San Rafael, CA; sisters Madeleine Forsythe and Rosary Ann Martin of Ohio; children Leilani Smith and Joseph Henry Jr., of Maryland, Joan Henry of New York, and Peter Henry of San Rafael, CA; grandchildren Kathryn Brown, Wendy Smith, April Henry, Michael Smith and Joseph Henry III, all of Maryland, and Gonkeylah (GC) Yerry of New York, Caroline and Claire Henry of San Rafael, CA. He will also be greatly missed by his numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, in-laws and relatives and friends. In remembrance of his extraordinary and full life, a visitation will be held at Duggan's Mortuary in Daly City, CA on Sunday October 16, 2011, from 4pm - 9pm and a vigil at 7pm. Also, a funeral mass will be held at St. Brendan's Parish Church at 29 Rockaway Avenue, San Francisco, on Monday October 17, 2011, at 10am, followed by a reception for family and friends at Forest Hill Clubhouse at 381 Magellan Avenue, San Francisco, CA. In remembrance, the family suggests a donation to one of the scholarships in his name, or one of the educational institutions he served, as follows: the Joseph L. Henry Fellowship at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (Boston, MA); the Joseph L. Henry Award and Scholarship at the National Dental Association Foundation (Washington, DC); Howard University College of Dentistry (Washington, DC); Illinois College of Optometry (Chicago, IL).
