Joseph Vincent Lerma Joseph was born in Mexicali, Mexico and in early childhood moved to California with his family. After graduating from Samuel Gompers in San Francisco, he then joined the Army
at 18 years of age. During WWII
he served under General Patton in the Third Army as a Company Medic while stationed in Germany. After returning home to San Francisco from the war, he met and fell in love with Joan G. McDonald.
Joe's family life included their three daughters, Linda, Valerie, and Melissa. Joe enjoyed many happy years of family vacations to Yosemite, Russian River and Tahoe. Joe retired as a Muni Operator from the S.F. Municipal Railway after 35 years.
After retirement he and his wife, Joan, enjoyed many fun road trips with friends from the Doelger Senior Center. Also, he and Joan volunteered for years at the S.F.F.D. Toy Program.
Joe enjoyed playing tennis even into his early 80's with Jocko, Jim and many other friends. Also, Joe and Joan participated in local square dancing clubs, bowling and cards with family and friends.
A very important part of Joe's life was spent nurturing his loving grandchildren; Jennifer, Joey, Christopher, Christina and Jessica. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Vincent and Rosario Lerma. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Joan Lerma; his daughters, Linda (Michael) DeMartini, Valerie (Sandra) Stewart, and Melissa (Donald) Fields; his loving sister, Paulina Galligan and her children Patrick and Bonnie; he is also survived sister-in-law Audrey (Norman) Prupas, brother-in-law Robert McDonald, and nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may visit Sunday February 10, 2013 from 3pm and are invited to attend the Vigil Service at 6pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City. The Funeral Service will begin Monday February 11, 2013 at 11am also at Duggan's Serra Mortuary followed by interment at Skylawn Memorial Park, San Mateo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the S.F.F.D. Toy Program and/or Pathways Hospice. Finally, the family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all the dedicated and caring staff at Mission Villa, Daly City.
