Mary Wand

Mary Elizabeth (Arns) Wand Mary Elizabeth Arns Wand, a longtime resident of the Bay Area and Madison, NJ, passed away in New Providence, NJ on January 12, 2013. Born on July 13, 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was the third of Robert W. and Mary Ellen Arns' four children. The family moved to California and later to Quincy, Illinois, where she graduated from high school. Mary graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in nursing and the University of Michigan with a Master's Degree in Public Health. During World War II she was a nurse with the US Navy, achieving the rank of Ensign before her honorable discharge. After the war she moved to San Francisco Bay area and worked as a public health nurse in Oakland. In 1952 she married Paul R. Wand, who also had moved to San Francisco from Quincy after the war. Mary and Paul lived in Berkeley, Orinda, and La Cañada, near Los Angeles, before moving to Melbourne, Australia for Paul's work. Mary loved to travel and living half way around the world allowed her plenty of opportunities to indulge in her passion and to make global friendships. Paul was transferred back to the US in 1969 and the family settled in Madison NJ. Mary worked for the Madison Public Health Department until she and Paul retired in 1983 and continued their passion for traveling and visiting friends around the country and the world. Mary is survived by her children Mary Ellen, of Oakland, and Robert and his wife Darian and their children Michael, Jamie, and Matthew, of Whitehouse Station, NJ; her brother Tom and his wife Gladys, of Sarasota FL; and her sister-in-law Eloise Arns Ludlow, of Napa and her children John Arns and Steve Arns of St. Helena and their families. She was predeceased by Paul and her parents and brothers John and Robert. Private services have been held.
