Ray Shurtz

Ray Lavell Shurtz of Rohnert Park CA, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday December 19, 2012 at age 80. Ray was born in Central Arizona on August 25, 1932 and later moved to Marin County with his parents Raymond and Lottie, and brothers Craig and Lyle. Ray graduated from Tamalpais High School, Mill Valley CA, in 1951. After spending time in the United States Air Force he married his first wife, Beverly (Green) and had four children while living in Novato CA. He and his second wife, Marie (Reeder), lived in San Francisco for many years. Ray later moved to Rohnert Park to be closer to his children.
Ray worked most of his career for Pacific Bell in San Francisco before retiring in 1985. He continued to work for a number of years with his good friend Paul D. Fry at Fry Communications. A lover of the great outdoors, he spent his retirement years being very active and doing what he loved most with his children and grandchildren: camping, hunting, fishing and shooting competition sporting clays. He also loved just spending time having great meals (often the result of his hunting efforts), wine and conversation with his family and close friends. While Ray and his boys shared the love of the outdoors and hunting, he and his daughter had a special bond with sports -the SF Giants- and they never missed checking in with each other after each and every game, especially during the playoffs and the World Series.
Ray's recent move to Rohnert Park brought him and his family much happiness; he was able to be a part of all of their lives on a daily basis without the long drive from San Francisco and back. Ray never turned down an invite from "the kids" for dinner, lunch or just a visit. He especially enjoyed regular Sunday dinners with Michael and his family. While Ray was a proud father and grandfather, he would never hesitate to tell you how proud he was to be a great grandfather as well.
He is survived by his children, Michael and Clinton Shurtz, Rohnert Park, CA, Barry Shurtz, Novato CA, and Linda Fortney, Rohnert Park CA; brother Craig Shurtz of Larkspur CA; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
All of Ray's friends are invited to celebrate his life at Trek Winery in Novato CA, on January 6, 2013 from 1-4 PM.
