Robert Rankin Barton (Bob)


Passed away peacefully on June 28, 2014, surrounded by adoring family members.

Born Feb. 8, 1927 in Berkeley, and raised in Willows, Bob attended Cal after serving in the Navy. He majored in Agricultural Economics, also passed the CPA exam upon graduation in 1949, and went on to attend Boalt Hall Law School where he was an honor graduate, Class of '53.

Bob practiced law in SF with the firm of McEnerney & Jacobs before opening his own law practice, Barton & Barton, in Oakland. He specialized for 35 years in bankruptcy law. He also was active in State Bar activities, the consumer movement, local politics, and later in AA functions.

He was also a wonderful, loving father. Family highlights were the annual camping trips to the Lair of the Bear and years spent coaching his sons' little league teams.

By the time of his death at age 87, Bob had lost his parents, brothers David and Jack, and granddaughter Corinne. His survivors include his three sons Jeff, David and Baird, his 8 grandchildren Skyler, Ariel, Miranda, Robert, Garret, Hayley, Cole and Jacob, his great-grandson Dominic, ex-wife Bobbie Barton, and long-time companion Martina Langley.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 25 at the clubhouse of the Tilden Park Golf Course in the Berkeley hills from 2-6 pm, with remarks scheduled to begin at 4pm.
