Rev. James W. Donovan

Rev. James W. Donovan, C.S.P Of the Paulist Fathers, died of a sudden heart attack on October 27, 2010 at the rectory of Old St. Marys Cathedral. Father Donovan was born on August 29, 1941 in Providence, RI of Thomas and Frances Donovan. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 27, 1968. As a Paulist Father he worked in parishes in Minneapolis, Tucson, Toronto, Portland, and Chicago. Father also worked at McGill University in Montreal and Boston University. Before coming to San Francisco the last time, he was the Superior of St. Pauls College, the Major Seminary of the Paulist Fathers, in Washington, D.C. Over the years, Father Jim served sixteen years at St. Marys Chinese Center and Parish in San Francisco. He studied at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, China with the Maryknoll Fathers and was fluent in Cantonese. He is survived by his brothers Thomas, Martin, Edward and his sister, Frances. The Vigil Service will be on Friday, November 5 at 7:00 pm and the Funeral Mass on Saturday, November 6 at 10:00 am at Old St. Marys Cathedral on the corner of Grant Avenue and California Street.
