Roy S. Cameron Jr.

Roy S. Cameron, Jr. After a long illness, Roy S. Cameron, a former Santa Clara County Planning Director, passed on December 26, 2010. He was born May 3, 1920 in San Francisco, CA. Attending school in San Francisco, Roy graduated from Lowell High School in 1937. He attended UC Berkeley and graduated in 1941 with a major in political science. Roy served during World War II as a lieutenant in the US Navy. After the war, Roy traveled to Montreal, Canada where he met his future bride, Helen McClure. They married on December 28, 1948. After briefly teaching at Tomales High School, Roy returned to UC Berkeley where he earned a Masters Degree in City Planning in 1951. Roy began his career in city planning with the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency. In 1954, he joined the newly formed Santa Clara County Planning Department where he rose through the ranks, becoming its director in 1967. Roy retired from this position in 1980. Having many interests, including stamp collecting, folk music, bird watching, model railroading, genealogy and history, Roy filled his retirement pursuing them. Roy spent the final five years of his life in residence at Our Lady of Fatima Villa where he received tender loving care. Roy is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Helen M. Cameron, his son, William R. Cameron, daughter, Glennis L. Cameron, daughter-in-law, Priscilla M. Cameron, grandchildren Katherine L. Miner, Andrew R. Cameron and Kevin P. Cameron and his expected great grandchild, Dakota Sue Miner. Visitation will be held from 6 PM to 9 PM with a vigil from 7 PM to 8 PM on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills in Los Gatos. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, January 3, 2011 at Sacred Heart Church with burial following at Madronia Cemetery, both in Saratoga. In lieu of flowers, Roy's family would appreciate donations to one of his many favorite charities including: The Nature Conservancy, Our Lady of Fatima Villa Foundation or Catholic Charities.
