Jack Chan Obituary

Jack Kum Foon Chan Surrounded by his loving family, Jack Kum Foon Chan peacefully passed away on October 26, 2010 at the age of 86. He was born March 14, 1924 in Sui Yan Village, Chung San, Guangdong Province, China and immigrated to the U.S. in 1952. Within 7 years, he owned his first grocery store, Clayton Market in San Francisco's Haight Street District. He then opened and ran his second grocery store, Sherman Market in the Cow Hollow District until his early retirement. He met his loving wife Miu Heung Lam Chan in 1964 and they were married a wonderful 46 years and raised three children, Clayton, Sherman and Elizabeth. Together, the entire family worked in the grocery store business. With a modest income, Jack and Miu Heung worked hard to provide their children a great education, sending them to Catholic private schools and ultimately graduating from UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara and Harvard University. He was President of the Golden Gate Chinese Grocery and Siu Yan Village Chinese Associations. Over the years, he would provide support to his relatives and friends who recently immigrated to the U.S. In his early retirement years, he traveled the world with his wife and friends. Toward the end of his life, he enjoyed the company of friends and relatives playing mahjong and trips to restaurants. He thoroughly loved and cherished his time with his four grandchildren - Austin, Kyle, Miya, and Miles. He is survived by his wife Lam Miu Heung Chan, sons Clayton (Evangelina) Chan and Sherman (Dori) Chan, daughter Elizabeth Chan, and grandchildren. Visitation service will occur on Friday November 5 at 6 P.M. and Funeral Service will occur on November 6 at 11 A.M. All services will be held at Green Street Mortuary 649 Green Street in San Francisco. Donations in Memory of Jack can be made to California Pacific Medical Center Foundation PO Box 7999, SF, CA.

I knew Jack Chan when he operated the Clayton Market. My grandfather Nick Catramis was his landlord. My mother Olga Burress, who consider him her friend, attended Mr. Chan's wedding reception. I worked for about one year for Mr. Chan in his market when I was a young teenager (about 1957). I remember him proudly showing me his California driver's license. I believe it was his first license. Mr. Chan was a man of high character, good will and very hard working. I believe he found his American dream. It was a honor to have crossed his path.
