Sue Joe Obituary
Sue Kiu Wong Joe 88, of Henderson, NV, formerly long-time resident of Clarksdale, MS, passed away on October 8, 2010 at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals - Siena Campus in Henderson. Mrs. Joe was born in a small village outside of Canton, China. She married Yick Wah Joe in China and eventually immigrated to the United States. She and her husband set up residence in Shelby, MS, where they were independent merchants in the grocery trade. Later they moved to Clarksdale, MS, where they owned and operated a successful grocery business and where they raised five children. As entrepreneurs of a neighborhood grocery, Mrs. Joe and her husband were typical of Chinese American families throughout the Delta region of Mississippi. After nearly fifty years of working, she and her husband retired and often traveled to visit family. She loved to cook, sew, tend to her rose and vegetable gardens, play mahjong, listen to Chinese opera, and practice Tai Chi. One of her treasured pastimes was compiling family photo albums full of memories. She will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who loved and knew her. Mrs. Joe was preceded in death by her beloved husband Yick, her loving daughter Pauline, and her dear brother Ping Foon Wong. Survivors include son Dr. Harry Joe and wife Donna; son Dr. Jeffrey Joe; daughter Anna and husband Dennis Sitcler; daughter Susan and husband Randall Chinn; son-in-law George Williams; sisters Wong Foon Nor, Wong Foon You, and Wong Fong Tang and her husband Ngao Loong Yiu; stepmother Jan Sitou Wong; half sister Siu Siu and husband David Chan; half brother Damon Wong and wife Irene; half brother Allen Wong and wife Po Yuk; eight grandchildren Claudia, Brian, Karen, Lori, Katherine, Christopher, Julie, and Suzanne; four great-grandchildren Jacob, Samuel, Vera, and Evan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Green Street Mortuary, 649 Green Street, San Francisco, CA, on Saturday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Chinese Cemetery (Look San), 4650 Callan Blvd., Daly City, CA. Flowers may be sent to Green Street Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Joe's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
