Mike Blackford passed away in Magdeburg, Germany while traveling with his wife in Europe, trying to meet their goal of visiting every country in the world. His death, due to pancreatic cancer, was unexpected and occurred while pursuing his favorite pastime, traveling to exotic places and meeting interesting people. Mike was dearly loved by his family and passed away surrounded by as many as could be there under difficult circumstances.

Mike will truly be missed. Our family sat and listened to many stories of adventures the world over. The people he would meet on trips and the lives that he touched.
We will miss seeing the beard grow in thick for the Santa gigs.

Mike used to stop by on Tuesday mornings at the Beanery cafe on 9nth Ave in SF on his way to volunteering as a docent at the Hall of Science in Golden Gate Park.He was a wealth of info on a wide variety of subjects including hybrid&electric vehicles(he owned both).
I was impressed by his completion of a crossword puzzle in 5 minutes.
After not seeing Mike for a while we thought he might be traveling(since we've known him, he had traveled to Japan,Russia and Turkey). We were saddened to see him in the SF Chronicle's obituaries(very well-written obit).

What an unexpected shock. I thought of Mike last Tuesday at the Hidden Villa Holiday Volunteer Gathering. His knowledge and information of the world and nature, and energy always amazed me. It will be sad not to see him but he will forever be in our memories

Dear Charlotte and family, We are very sorry to hear of Mikes sudden passing. We were recalling , not to long ago how my brother Joe and Mike would ride down to Hollister on Mikes Vespa.
I remember how Joe, Billi, you and Mike and other couples would go camping together and had children who were close in age. They always had good times together. I know they are up there having a great time again. Mike was a wonderful person always a great smile with a twinkle in his eyes. Our prayers and thought go out to you. I will let Angela know. Respectfully, Mary Munoz -Martinez

Although I wrote this on Facebook previously, I wanted to add it here as well. Your Dad made a great impression and impact on my life. He showed me that superior intelligence and kindness and caring could exist in one man. I remember with great fondness the time I spent in Alaska with your family and know that your Dad is now sharing with someone the explanation tectonic plate shifting and telling them they must watch "If" and "The King of Hearts"... Thoughts are with your Mom and your family.
