Age 101, passed away in Pleasanton CA on November 7, 2013 after a three day bout with pneumonia and resulting complications. Alan was born on March 14, 1912 in San Francisco CA. He is survived by his two children, Stephen Wiel and Susan Wreden; by his four grandchildren Colin Wiel, Devon Cohn, Christopher Wreden, and Jeffrey Wreden; and by nine great grandchildren.
Alan's great grandfather and family immigrated to the U.S. in 1854. Alan's grandfather moved to San Francisco from Baltimore in the late 1870's with his infant son Alfred Louis Wiel, who was to become Alan's father. Alan's mother, Fannie Strauss Kahn, was born in San Francisco. Alan lived all his life in San Francisco until his wife of 69 years, Jane Davis, died in 2004. He then moved to Rosewood Gardens in Livermore to be near his daughter. He attended Galileo High School and for decades was a gunsmith at his own shop (Al's Gun Shop) on Balboa Avenue.
Alan was a hunter and also took up competitive trapshooting in the 1970s. He won the state championship a record four times: in 1978 in the veterans class (over 60), in 1984 in the seniors class (over 70), in 1985 in the seniors class, and in 1997 at the age of 85 again in the seniors class. One of his favorite quotes was, "mother's birthday is opening of dove season".
Alan will be remembered by his family for being an often charming, often cantankerous symbol of longevity and support for the NRA.
