Allan Unger Obituary

Allan M. Unger, MD Born on January 30, 1925 in Petersburg, Virginia, the second of five siblings. As a boy, Allan enjoyed scouting and played soprano sax. During World War II, while serving as an orderly, he decided to become a doctor. He attended Univ. of VA, then the Medical College of Virginia. Allan and Jane married June 22, 1947, in Sarah Segal's backyard. Allan decided to move his family to San Francisco in 1960, where he developed his nephrology practice and dialysis center, and helped start the CPMC kidney transplant service. He was appointed first chief of the hospital's Nephrology department. Accompanied by Jane, Allan travelled throughout his life to many destinations. He served on the boards of Congregation Emanu-El and Jewish Family and Children's Services, where he is credited with starting Dream House, a shelter for homeless women and children. Bridge was an important hobby, and he recently became a Silver Life Master. Allan loved reading, using the internet, raising orchids, flying radio-controlled gliders, and designing and building fine furniture. He retired from medical practice in 1989. He died peacefully at home on March 29, 2012. Allan is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter Harriette Unger (Richard Grabstein); son Robert Unger (Lora Thielbar); son Richard Unger (Connie); grandchildren Anna (Justin), Michael, Kirsten, Anika (Erin), Joshua, Sarah (Craig), Julia (Jason), and Jesse; and great-grand daughters Riley and Ara. Memorial service is TODAY, Monday, April 2, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Congregation Emanu-el, 2 Lake Street at Arguello, SF. In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan's memory may be made to Jewish Family and Children's Services, Congregation Emanu-El, or the Foundation for the Preservation and Advancement of Bridge.

As a young intern at CPMC in 1966, I had the distinct privilege and pleasure of meeting Dr. Unger on the hospital floors when we did our morning rounds. He was so warm and friendly and had his patented greeting of: "Hi, Kids!" which I got to really love and look forward to. After I returned to practice on the East Coast, I adopted this greeting myself in his honor. Now I will do so in his memory. I extend my sincerest heartfelt sympathies to all of his family and friends.

We are so sorry to have read about Allan's passing. He was such a decent and caring man with so many and varied interests. He taught me how to use my first Macintosh, oh so many years ago, as well as having played duplicate bridge with him and Jane.
We express our deepest condolences to the entire family. Having just lost my Mother and Sister these past months, I can feel your pain.May you have only good memories of your wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Sincerely,

Richard Unger
