Howard R. Basch
Howard was born in Oakland on May 26, 1919 to Dorothy and Joseph Basch. Howard died at the age of 93 on Sept. 11, 2012. Howard was in the Navy, served as a tail gunner on Grumann Avengers and was on 3 escort carriers- Natoma Bay, Block Island, and the Card. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, American Defense Ribbon, European- North Africa Middle East Ribbon, Asia-Pacific Ribbon and three air medals. Howard had 3 sons Doug, David and Don with his first wife Mary Davy Petersen and later married Aileen Rovere. Howard lived in Oakland until he moved to Houston in 1958 and finally settled in Gilroy where he became General Manager of Gentry's. Howard was a fisherman, archer, golfer, rock carver, and poker player. Howard had a keen sense of humor and always had a joke! He was truly part of the Greatest Generation and will be missed, always loved. RIP, Pop!
