Alfred McMicking Obituary

Alfred "Al" Lawrence McMicking

Oct. 20, 1946 ~ Mar. 19, 2016

Alfred L. McMicking, born October 20, 1946, in San Francisco, California died Saturday, March 19, 2016, at his home in Bend, Oregon. He was 69.

Al grew up in Atherton, California, but enjoyed his parents' home at Santa Angelina Ranch in Calistoga, California. He spent much of his time at the Ranch with his family and friends. He eventually built a house and lived on the Ranch. The McMicking Ranch was untouched property that was a haven for the best fishing and hunting. Al became the ultimate outdoors' man.

Although he traveled all over the world to fish, his favorite place was the Smith River, California where he knew the river by heart. It was magical to him. He enjoyed bird watching, hunting, and traveled extensively throughout the world.

He loved to tie flies and was an expert fisherman. He co-owned the fly shop, Confluence, at the Old Mill in Bend, Oregon, where his diverse fish and North American and African collection of trophies may be seen.

He was a member of the Field and Tule Duck Club in Woodland, California. Al enjoyed vegetable gardening and maintained an incredible assortment of vegetables.

Al is survived by his devoted son, Brent McMicking; daughter-in-law, Paige Van Ness; and their daughter, Alexandra McMicking.

He will be missed by his siblings, Lexie Ellsworth, Henry C. McMicking, Bennett McMicking and their respective spouses, Robert Ellsworth, Debbie McMicking, and Sharon McMicking along with his nieces and nephew.

A memorial celebration of Al's life will be held later this spring.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to benefit U.S. Veterans to Central Oregon Project Healing Waters, COPHW, c/o Deschutes Trout Unlimited, 16 NW Kansas, Bend, OR 97701; or online to www.cophw.org.

Warm memories of the McMickings are recalled -- "Alfie" was such fun when we were teens. And "Ronnie," my age was full of adventure! May your memories of Al be for a blessing!
