Anna Barta Obituary

Dr. Anna Barta Born Apr. 3, 1920 in Debrecon, Hungary, the only daughter of Istvan and Rozsa Szekely. She was a survivor of the holocaust, having been interned at Auschwitz. After the war she returned to Hungary and married George Barta in September, 1945 by 1948, after the communist takeover, she and her husband and two young sons decided to find a new life in the west and escaped to Austria, where the family lived for 2 years, before finally moving in 1951 to San Francisco, which she considered home for the rest of her life. At the time of her arrival in San Francisco, she was one of the very few lady doctors there, and she made house calls. She was a very dignified person who enjoyed the symphony, opera, card playing and traveling. During her residence in San Francisco, she made many, many friends, both here and around the world, and nobody who met her could forget her. She died peacefully at home on Nov. 29th at age 90, due to complications from a stroke. She was predeceased by her husband George and is survived by her two sons Ivan (Kimiko) and Leslie, and two granddaughters. Services will be held at Sinai Memorial Chapel at 11:00 a.m., Sunday followed with entombment at Salem Cemetery.

Dear Family Barta: Your mom was a colleague of my mom, Minnie Goldberg. I have fond memories of Anna as she did a house call on me when I was newly married and still living in SF. Also, there were many times when I would see her at my parents' office at 450 Sutter.
