Audrey Goodfriend Obituary
Audrey Goodfriend

November 14, 1920 - January 19, 2013

A life long anarchist, as a young woman, Audrey hitchhiked from NYC where she was born, to Toronto to meet Emma Goldman. Moving to San Francisco in 1949, Audrey was closely associated with the beatniks (Kenneth Rexroth, etc.). Along with a dedicated group of pacifists, Audrey founded Walden Center and School in Berkeley, teaching there for many years. Later she worked as a bookkeeper for Moe's Books, and acted with Oakland's Stagebridge. She was an avid swimmer at the Berkeley YMCA, and swam there the day before she died. Audrey is featured in the documentary Emma Goldman: The Anarchist Guest (2000) which appeared in many festivals and was broadcast on PBS. She is survived by her companion of many years, David Koven of Vallejo; two daughters, Diva Goodfriend-Koven of New York and Nora Goodfriend-Koven of Berkeley; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. An anarchist community memorial will be held for Audrey on March 14 at 7:00 PM, at the Humanist Hall 411 28th Street in Oakland. Audrey's family and friends will celebrate her life on Sunday March 31, at 2:30 at the Hillside Club 2286 Cedar St. in Berkeley.
