Obituary Condolences

Ben Kohl

July 25, 2013

Ben was born in Oakland, but grew up in St. Louis, before returning to SF. He worked for many years as an auto mechanic and elevator constructor (I.U.E.C. Local 8). He earned a BA in anthropology from SF State in 1986, and went on to attain a PhD in city and regional planning from Cornell in 1999. Ben had taught at Temple Univ. since 2001.

With his wife Linda, Ben had lived intermittently in Bolivia since the 1980s, where they wrote three books about the country, including the forthcoming Evo's Bolivia: Continuity and Change.

Ben died suddenly of a heart attack in Philadelphia at 59. His great sense of humor, sharp analytical, technical and communication skills and deep compassion will be missed by the many whose lives he touched. He was a great parent, friend, teacher, and community member. He is survived by his parents; his wife Linda; and his children, Maya and Minka Farthing-Kohl; three godchildren, two brothers and a sister and nieces and nephews.
