Benedict Budai Obituary

Benedict S Budai MD 4-28-1922 - 11-16-2010 Born in Detroit of Hungarian parents, Benedict was a boy who loved books and would have become a chemist but for the intervention of Providence and the US Army. He became a doctor instead, and practiced "infernal" medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco for 30 years. After taking early retirement in 1984, Ben devoted his energies to writing poetry, the discussion forums at Senior Net, and taking classes at the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning. Ben loved books, science fiction, conversation and gadgets, but most of all, he loved life itself. He enjoyed being alive when odds said otherwise. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty, and his sons Steven, Paul and David (Katie), and bonus daughter Nancy Wintrup and many beloved friends, as well as the all the patients who remember the humanist physician so quick with a pun. No services have been held per his request. The family plans a celebration of his life to be announced at a later date.

Dr. Budai took care of my father in the 60s and 70s a SF Policeman who got a heart attack on the job in 1963. I remember his visits to Kaiser over the years and this kind man with always a kind and thoughtful thing to say. I was delegated to bringing his office Sees Candies every year.
