Bettie Slissman Obituary
Bettie K. Slissman

Bettie was born on November 5, 1914 in St. Paul Minnesota and passed away peacefully at home at the Carlisle in San Francisco on April 12, 2013, at the age of 98. Our Bettie was elegant, petite, always beautifully dressed, funny, loving, and feisty.

As a girl she studied figure skating and ballet dancing. She worked for the American Red Cross during and after World War II, and was particularly proud of having driven a Red Cross ambulance in Belgium.

Bettie traveled extensively throughout her life. As a young woman she lived in Japan for several years, where she taught English. Later, she and her late husband Bill traveled the world, by land and by cruise ship. Bettie was a wonderful ballroom dancer and she and Bill were a striking pair on the dance floor. They always enjoyed dancing while on their many cruises to Alaska and other destinations.

Bettie was an avid fan of classical music, and especially the opera. She subscribed to the San Francisco Opera for over 40 years, and took many opera tours to Europe, New York, and Santa Fe. Classical music was always playing on Bettie's prized Bose radio.

Throughout her life Bettie attended exercise and fitness classes, and for a number of years volunteered as an aerobics teacher at the Stonestown YMCA. She strongly believed that physical exercise nourished the soul, and she always encouraged her friends to be fit. For many years she also exercised her mind by taking classes at the Fromm Institute, of which she was a great supporter.

Bettie had a life-long love of dogs, and had cherished her border collie, Odessa and her black Lab, Mary. Her friends often sent her cards and calendars featuring dogs, and she had a collection of stuffed dogs received as gifts. In the last two years of her life she was blessed with regular visits from two wonderful dogs, Sammy and Dixie, who brought her great contentment and joy.

Bettie was predeceased by her husband Bill Slissman. She is survived by Bill's daughters, Karen, Joanne and Janet. During the last nine years of her life she lived at the Carlisle, where she was very comfortable and happy, and where she had many dear friends among both residents and staff. She will be greatly missed by her close friends Molly, Billie, Flora, Maha, Enis, Jeff, Frank and Rosemary, Florence, Rose, Josephine, Miriam and Charles, Iris, Dean, Regina, and many others.

In the last few years she was fortunate to have received support and care from a wonderful group of loving and loyal people - "Team Bettie" included her caregivers Kathleen, Marguerite, Raachael, Tsengel, Jean, Shirley, and Medina, her accountant Julia, her case manager Rena, and the Carlisle Wellness staff.

At Bettie's request, there will be no formal service. We invite all of her friends to join us in remembering Bettie at a reception to be held at the Carlisle, 1450 Post Street, San Francisco, at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013. Contributions to the Stonestown YMCA, the San Francisco Opera, or are suggested in lieu of flowers.
