Charles Dissel Obituary

Charles T. Dissel Age 82, passed away quietly on Sept. 30, 2010 with the same dignity and perseverance that distinguished his entire life. Charles, the last child of Albert and Anna Dissel, was born on March 15, 1928 in Seattle, WA. He grew up in a large family with brothers Albert and J. Kelton and sisters Marie, Annette, and Dorothy, all deceased. Mr. Dissel never married. After graduation from high school Charles worked until called to serve his country in the Army. In 1951 he was assigned to a unit in Funabashi, Japan that supported the re-establishment of Japan's manufacturing capabilities in the post-war era. He very much enjoyed Asian culture and revisited Japan later in life. Upon discharge from the Army he enrolled at the University of Washington and graduated with a Business degree in Accounting. After working a short period on the East Coast, Mr. Dissel relocated to San Francisco where he spent his professional career with the Del Monte Corporation. He remained in San Francisco after his retirement in 1986 and for the rest of his life. Charles enjoyed sports, particularly baseball, bowling , golf and the '49ers. He was very attached to the people and businesses of the Richmond neighborhood where he lived for over forty years and was known to all as "Charlie". He looked forward to the Army and company reunions he often attended and his trips to visit relatives around the country. But, what brought him the most pleasure was touring visiting friends and relatives around San Francisco. Charles was a virtual ambassador for San Francisco. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the area's points of interest, a detailed understanding of all its transportation services, and a personal history with almost every section of the city. Charles is greatly missed by his local San Francisco friends and his fourteen nieces and nephews living throughout the Western United States. He would want us to remember him by being especially respectful and tolerant of others, as he was, and by enjoying life's simple pleasures. The entire family wishes to thank the medical personnel and family members who have assisted Charles throughout the period of his illness, and to extend special thanks to the Sutter Visiting Nurse Hospice Team. At Charles' request there will be a family memorial service in Seattle.

As a youngster, I once asked Uncle Charlie what the "T" stood for in his middle name. After he told me, I grew up convinced that I had the only uncle with the middle name of....Tadpole.

Still puts a smile on my face.
Thanks Charlie

Charles lived for many, many years in the Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco. He was well known in the cafes, restaurants and shops around Geary, Clement, and 24th Ave. as "CHARLIE".

As a nephew who frequently visited him from Seattle, I was always amazed at the number of people who recognized him as we walked the streets of his neighborhood or stopped in for breakfast or dinner at his favorite spots.

Charlie was a prodigious walker and he guided me on several walking tours throughout San Francisco that were legend in our family.

He is greatly missed by all who knew him.

Dear Family Members:
As niece & nephew of U. Charles, Lance & I would like to express our sadness at the loss of this wonderful man who had such respect for others and such love for his family members. He was so kind to us when first relocated to San Francisco as young college graduates and again, later, when relocated again to S.F. with our two sons. Many wonderful holiday meals together & trips up the northern coast were shared with Charles. We will miss him very much...truly a good man!

Dear Friends of Uncle Charles-

While I'm saddened at the passing of this good and gentle man, my heart is eased by hearing the stories you have shared with me.

I'll share another here. Last night I carved a pumpkin in Charles's honor. Sounds strange I know, but about 10 years ago, when in Seattle for Marie's 90th? birthday, we all carved pumpkins together.

It was the first time in Charlie's life that he had ever carved a jack-o-lantern. I was a bit shocked, and saddened by that at first, but the simple joy he expressed in doing it was so similar to the way he lived: taking simple pleasure in being together, and enjoying what life brought his way.

So for Charlie, and Mimi (whose birthday approaches), and Kel, and all of their generation- I am lighting a candle.

It just happens to be glowing within a smiling pumpkin face....
