A San Francisco resident, died on September 20, 2013 after a brief illness. Born on January 14, 1922 in Pueblo, Colorado, he attended Yale University graduating in 1942 to enlist in the Navy. He returned to attend Yale Law School and met and married Winifred (Connie) Donohue in New Haven. In 1948 Chuck and Connie moved to San Francisco where they raised their children, Melissa, Carolyn, and Charles Henry (Hank.) Following Connie's death in 1987, he was married to Elizabeth Case Williamson until her death in 2011.
Charles (or Chuck) practiced law as a trial lawyer for Cooper White and Cooper - most notably successfully defending authors and publishers in first amendment libel lawsuits. He was active in the Bar Association and on the board of the Mechanics' Institute Library. He traveled extensively with Elizabeth and enjoyed their social activities with friends and her family, including her children Charlotte, Stephen, and Alec. An avid bridge player, he participated in a weekly game until his death.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Melissa and Carolyn, a grandson, Joel Mullins, his brother, George, his cousin, Carl Hanson (Valerie Vreeland), and nephews and a niece. He was known by his friends and colleagues as an incisive intellect with a great sense of humor.
His family thanks the UCSF staff for their care and compassion during his illness. A celebration of his life will be held on October 24, 2013. For details contact the family at [email protected]. Donations in his memory can be made to the Women's Community Clinic in San Francisco, Mechanics' Institute Library, or UCSF Medical Center.

Charlie was a senior trial attorney at Cooper, White & Cooper when I started in 1984. He taught me things I'm still passing on as the inherited wisdom of one of the lions of the San Francisco trial bar. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to work at his elbow and to have seen him in action. It was grand.
