Chin-Tzu Peng

October 10, 1921 – April 10, 2018

Dr. Chin-Tzu Peng, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry of UCSF School of Pharmacy, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2018 with his beloved wife Margaret Peng at his side. Dr. Peng was born near Xi'an, China on October 10, 1921 into a banker's family. In the mid 1940s, he graduated from Fu Jen Catholic University of Beijing with a BS degree in chemistry. In 1947 he came to the United States and continued his studies. In 1953, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical chemistry at UC Berkeley and started working at UCSF soon after his graduation until his official retirement in the mid 1990s. During these four decades and beyond, he worked tirelessly as a chemist in the field of tritium and liquid scintillation, and produced more than 120 publications, including journal articles and book chapters, and served as referee for many scientific journals. As one of the most distinguished scholars in this field worldwide, he received the prestigious Melvin Calvin Award by the International Isotope Society in 1994. During his spare time, he enjoyed reading, traveling, and playing chess with his grandchildren. Dr. Peng is survived by his wife of 40 years Margaret Peng, his three sons An-Ho Peng, James Peng, Alex Gu, three daughters-in-law Ai Jun Chen, Anna Peng, and Mimi Xiong, and three grandchildren: Mei Zhu Peng, Steven Peng, and Emily Gu.
