Clifford Josephson Obituary

Clifford Anthon Josephson July 23, 1922 - Sept. 3, 2010 Passed away peacefully at his home in Greenbrae. A native of New York City. Married Margaret Griffin; son, Clifford Jr. Married Claudette Pomeranz; daughter, Jennifer; son, Joshua. Survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Kathleen; by his children; and by his stepsons, Kevin and Shawn Mills. Also by 5 grandchildren, Erica, Jessa, Dustin, Nicholas, and Laurel. He earned his B. S. at Franklin & Marshall College; his M.A. and Ph.D. at Columbia University. He was also a Fulbright Scholar (Cambridge, England). He taught at CCNY, Hunter College, University of Hawaii, and for most of his career, San Francisco State University, where he served for some years as Vice-Chair of the English Department. He also served as an Assistant Director of the Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria. During his university career, he was co-editor of a successful freshman textbook that went into 4 editions. He served in the USMC 1942-1946, and in the USMCR until 1951 (1st lieutenant). He had a great love of the sea, and sailed his 27-foot sloop to Hawaii one summer, one of his happiest memories. Memorial gathering to be held at a time yet to be determined. Our inexpressible gratitude to the angels of Hospice By the Bay, and of From the Heart, who cared for him as only true angels could.

My very favorite teacher at SF State in early 70's. What a wonderful man. So sorry to hear of his passing.
