Cornelius Murphy Obituary
Cornelius "Con" Murphy

1929-2013


Cornelius "Con" Murphy died Aug. 24, 2013, in Sonoma. He was 84.


Born and raised in San Francisco's Noe Valley, Mr. Murphy graduated from St. James High School in 1946. After attending City College of San Francisco, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Japan and Korea during that conflict.


He joined the San Francisco Police Department, rising through the ranks to the position of Chief of Police, retiring in 1986 after 34 years of service.


After retirement, Mr. Murphy served as a volunteer docent at the Año Nuevo Reserve and pursued his interests in fishing, golf, bird-watching, woodworking and wood turning.


He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty, and his four children: Noreen, Sheila, Neil (Christy), and Eileen (Wayne). Other survivors include his brother Daniel (Claudine); his brother Donald and sister-in-law Beverly Dennehy; grandchildren Cassie, Pat, and Matt; and many nieces and nephews.


Friends are invited to a vigil at Duggan's Mission Chapel, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Committal services and entombment will be held on Friday, Aug 30, at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, CA. Donations to the are preferred by the family.
