Daniel Cetinich Obituary

Daniel Cetinich, 72, author, historian and retired City College Instructor, died at home of pancreatic cancer. Born to Palma and George Cetinich in Portland, OR, he was a graduate of USF and SFSU, and a long-time resident of Berkeley. He was a Peace Corps teacher in Tunisia in the 1960's. He had an exceptional mind and a lifelong interest in politics and world culture. Just months before his passing he published his first novel, Paris Illusions. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dana Bass, his son, Aaron Bass-Cetinich(Cartitiane Malheiros), granddaughter Ella, brother George Cetinich(Maria), sisters Frances Cetinich and Jacqueline Shook(Robert) and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Rosemary Farac(William).To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Daniel was my History teacher at Lick-Wilmerding High School. He was very stimulating and 50 years later I still remember things he said and taught. He had our class read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. After that he took us on a class field trip to the James Allen meat packing plant, slaughter house. The best field trip ever!

I continue to have conversations with Daniel; I hear his voice clearly; I reimagine the many times we roamed over so many topics and interests. His was a bright and sharp intellect; his was a heart of joy and and compassion. Miss you, dear friend!

my husband and i have very warm memories of dan from Tunis in the 60's. he was the sort of person who would suddenly open the door of your car and leap in when you were stopped at a stoplight (and hadn't seen him!) -- we often speak of him; i am very sorry to hear of his death.

Daniel was my uncle and was the true definition of a wonderful uncle. He cared for me when I was small child. He was a friend to my mom, dad, brothers and sisters. He was a friend to me. He was a man of peace. He always spoke his mind and in his sweet kind way would let me know when he disagreed with my young radical ways. We conversed always, and each conversation no matter how far it was spaced apart, always seemed like it was a continuance of our last conversation. His influence on me was good and lasting. He opened up my life to new ideas and and helped me see things from different perspectives. He always showed love for me. He was a kind man, he was devoted family man, he cared about people; he showed his love to many. I am proud that he was my uncle. Thank you Uncle Dan, You may not be here now and I will miss our conversations together, but I will remember all you taught me and how you changed my life for the better.

Daniel was a former colleague of mine in the 1980s in San Francisco. We remained good friends for many years-long after I left California for Oregon and then the East Coast. I always looked forward to visiting Daniel and Dana when I was in California. Daniel was a true renaissance man: he loved art, politics, ideas, literature, good food and drink. He lived well and worked passionately on his writing which is his enduring legacy to us, the living. I miss him.
