David Meherin Van Becker May 11, 1925 - Jan. 31, 2012 Born in San Francisco and a life long resident of the Bay Area, David Meherin Van Becker died at home with his family on January 31, 2012 after a long illness. He graduated from Tamalpais High School in Marin, going on to attend the University of California in Berkeley, receiving a graduate degree in English. He joined the English faculty at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, after which he wrote and appeared in a video course in Remedial Writing for KQED television He began a thirty five year career at San Jose State University where he taught writing and literature in the English Department, worked with student teachers, and headed a Remedial Writing Department. His literary and research interests were wide: he pioneered the study of Gothic Fiction at San Jose State University. He also worked in Linguistics when he taught in Rouen, France. He loved California's natural beauty and enjoyed kayaking in bays and walking the headlands. He was the loving husband of Nell, father of Leslie (Ed Clifford) and Antonia (Greg Lee) and Stephen (deceased); grandfather of Matthew and Genevieve Clifford and of Nicole and Marika Lee. A celebration of David's life by his family and friends will be held at his home in Nicasio, on Saturday, April 7 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
