Dorothy Brutting Obituary

Dorothy M. Brutting (nee Kasil) May 16, 1919 - Nov. 6, 2010 Born in Manhattan Dorothy was raised in Great Neck, L.I. Before WWII she was a governess for the Oliver Grace family and during the War worked as a supervisor at the Hazeltine Corp. In 1945 she married Charles C. Brutting. They resided in Astoria, NY and had a son, Tom. In Astoria Dorothy provided day care for young Ron Howard, actor-director, during his parents' early career. She became Ron's greatest fan and maintained a life-long friendship with his Mother. In 1968 the Bruttings moved to Connecticut. She battled cancer in 1976 in her usual determined way. After retiring Charles and she moved to Largo, Florida in 1981. They enjoyed their years there making many friends, traveling and taking many cruises. "Charlie" died in the 50th year of their marriage and Dorothy picked up and moved to San Francisco in 1996 to be closer to her son where he then resided. She led a vibrant life exploring and adopting the City. In her characteristic way she enjoyed taking daily long walks, seeing new things, or taking a drive in the country. She succumbed to the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's disease. Dorothy is survived by her son, Tom, and son-in-law, Ed York of Oakland, and pre-deceased by her husband, parents Stanley and Bessie, and a brother, William, of Great Neck. A private service will be held at Grace Cathedral, SF.
