Seaside, CA - Gene Herbert Englund, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend died on February 27, 2013 in Seaside, CA.
Gene was born on April 23, 1926 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the son of Herbert A. and MaryA. Englund. After graduating from Robert's High School, in Idaho, he joined the Navy in 1944. He completed a BS in Naval Science at the University of California at Berkeley(UCB), in 1945 and became an Ensign in the Navy. He spent a year decommissioning a small submarine chaser from Long Beach, CA to Key West, FL. He was released from the Navy in 1947. In 1948, he obtained a second degree in the School of Business Administration at UCB with a major in Finance and Economics. He also earned a MBA degree in 1950 from UCB.
In 1951, Gene worked as a controller for California Farm Supplies and met his future wife, Nancy Ellen Dann. They had seven children, including triplets. In 1952, he startedin public accounting with Touche Ross (later becoming Deloitte) in the San Francisco office and later in the Oakland office. His specialty was oil and gas accounting. After 26years of living as a family in Berkeley, they moved to several different cities including Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Houston, TX, and Evergreen, CO. After Gene retired from Deloitte in 1988, he and Nancy lived in Ahwahnee, CA, Incline Village, NV and the last eight years in Seaside, CA.
Gene's hobbies included traveling, running, backpacking, reading, and the fine arts,including the opera, ballet and classical music. He ran several marathons including the Boston marathon. His backpacking expeditions included hiking beyond the base camp of Mount Everest and hiking the entire John Muir trail. For over 50 years, Gene and Nancy enjoyed the annual Carmel Bach Festival.
We will never forget Gene's passion for nature and the performing arts which he shared with his family. We are grateful for having a loving and generous father who we grew up with and knew as "Dad." His spirit lives on in his children and grandchildren and his love of life will live in our hearts forever.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, a loving wife of 58 years. He is survived by his brother, Danny A. Englund of Hayward (formerly Idaho Falls, ID), and his seven children, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law,Adella Rose and her husband, De Rose from Oakland, CA.
A small, private service is planned for 11:00am on Friday, March 8, 2013 at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey, CA. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carmel Bach Festival, PO Box 575, Carmel, CA 93921 orwww.bachfestival.org/support.htm.
