Gil Ray was a Bay Area rock drummer, guitarist, and vocalist, best known for his recordings in the 1980s and 1990s as a member of the bands Game Theory and The Loud Family. A master at the drum kit, Gil had a melodic style and a whip-crack sound that was distinctly his own. His use of complex ornamentation earned the nickname "Gil's fills" among his fans. Even after retiring from drumming Gil stayed in demand as a percussionist on local studio recordings and was especially noted for his tasteful tambourine and triangle arrangements. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Gil was one of my favorite people, even though I knew him mainly as a work colleague. He was my supervisor for over 10 years at City Hall Records, and we would often (probably too often) engage in silly/profound discussions and would often crack each other up. The obit had it right... he was a sensitive, kind Southern Gent. Though we used to constantly joke that existence was futile and suck-y, Gil knew that it was also beautiful and good.

Gil used this picture once as his Facebook profile picture. I actually thought it was him! Nope, it's one of his favorite tv actors, Don Knotts. Gil always made me laugh! I miss him!
