Harriet was born in Berlin, Germany. She emigrated to the United States in 1952 as a newlywed, sponsored by her in-laws, Neal and Bina Mitchell. Her first job was as a waitress in North Beach; she always said she was lucky about the neighborhood, as the artists didn't seem to mind not getting the food they ordered while their waitress learned to speak English. Eventually, she and Leon bought a store, Village Foods on Ocean Ave., which they ran for over 25 years.
Harriet will be memorialized at 2 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2013, at Home of Peace Cemetery (1299 El Camino Real, Colma, CA 94014). The family wishes to thank Lisa Lorenzo, Linda MacLennan, Girlie Magsaysay, Edelhyn Lee, and MeliCor Home Care for their incredibly loving care during Harriet's last years. Anyone wishing to honor Harriet's memory might consider a contribution to the Jewish Home (302 Silver Ave., San Francisco, CA 94112).
