Herbert Tichman Obituary

Herbert Tichman Clarinetist 1922-2010 Herbert Tichman, of Walnut Creek, died peacefully in his sleep on October 31st. He was a noted chamber musician and pedagogue. Tichman grew up in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. and developed an interest in jazz while in high school. He later attended The Juilliard School where he studied flute and clarinet. In 1948 he married Ruth Budnevich, a pianist. As a duo, with the Tichman Trio and with the Berkshire Chamber Players they performed throughout the United States, Asia, Europe and South America. Their recordings included works by Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok, Reger, Schubert, Milhaud, and Stravinsky. He also premiered the Clarinet Concerto of Darius Milhaud and gave the first solo recital by a clarinetist in New York City. Tichman received a Masters Degree in composition from Queens College. In addition, he was active in the New York musical theatre scene and played in the original versions of many long-running musicals. He was on the faculty of both The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. He is survived by his daughters Nina, (and her husband Juergen Ortwin Rave) Nadya (and her husband John Imholz, granchildren David and Fanya) and Nomi.
